He was the father of Tenma Tobio, who died in an accident. In other words, he was the creator of the robot boy, Atom. Gifted scientists are renowned for their eccentricity, but in the world of Tezuka Osamu, there was no one like Dr. Tenma when it came to displaying a genius that was as close to "madness". Whilst he flaunted his faculties in the creation of Atom, he then shocked readers by turning Atom into a spectacle and selling him off, having abruptly realized that because Atom was a robot he would not grow up. He was highly successful in his role as the "lunatic father", and subsequently continued to play the part of the "frightful father" figure.
